This do-it-yourself tabletop garden includes an eco-friendly bamboo planter and five individually potted Sempervivum plants, commonly called hens and chicks. The biodegradable bowl is made from 75% bamboo and 25% melamine, and contains no drainage hole, so you can set it on indoor surfaces with confidence.

For best results, start with a base layer of gravel before adding the potting soil, preferably one formulated for succulents. You can even make your own optimized soil by blending builder's sand in with a regular potting mix. For a decorative touch, top the soil with a thin layer of miniature river rocks or small pebbles.

Hens and Chicks have short roots, which makes them ideal for planting in shallow containers. The main rosettes, known as the "hens," produce smaller rosettes, or "chicks," which helps them spread quickly. You can even "pick a chick" to plant in additional locations.
